Feeling ashamed of self means that you see yourself in a negative way. Not that you did something negative that you now regret, but that you ARE that.
Guilt and shame are often used interchangeably and that would be incorrect.
Guilt is behaving in a way that is negative and shame is viewing the self negatively. For example: “I did something bad” (guilt) versus “I am bad” (shame).
