Religion and Spirituality

The topic of religion and spirituality has been coming to me in different ways recently from my clients, from those in my group sessions in addition to articles and videos.

While meditating the other morning, I was guided to write my next blog on the difference between religion and spirituality.  Some of you will read this and judge my understanding of this and that is okay.  Others will read this and not get it at all and that is also okay.  Some of you will read this and will be validated and that too is okay.

When people ask if I am part of a church, I usually say to them I am more spiritual than religious.  I believe that we all have our own path and understanding of God’s words.  It is perfectly acceptable that people find God in being spiritual, meaning to follow God’s ten commandments and always work on being a good person.  For me, I follow my inner guidance (intuition) to do the right thinCross.jpgg.  For I believe that inner guidance is God speaking to me and what I am to do to help those I am in contact with.  I trust and believe that wholeheartedly, so that is exactly what I do.  Some people may not understand or accept my guidance and I am okay with that.  It isn’t their blessing I am seeking, only God’s.

I know several people who use a particular system of faith and worship (religion) to fill their soul and learn what God wants them to do to help those they are in contact with.  That is perfect for them and I trust and believe that they all will receive their guidance from God and I have faith they will follow it.

Neither one is right or wrong.  I believe all that matters is that each of us find what fills our soul from that higher source and do what we can to not only do what is right for others but listen to our guidance and follow what God has chosen for us.

There are several bible verses that speak about all creatures doing his bidding…the angels, storm winds, and those who rejoice before him with songs of joSpiritual-on-Rock.jpgy and praise.  Each of these are all different ways that God works to us and/or through us.  Again, neither one is right or wrong, each of these are extremely different but nonetheless effective, such as religion and spirituality.

I want to leave you all with bible verses that I just happened to come across.  It resonated with me and sums up what I really try to do everyday and I know others do too.  Those who follow the religious beliefs and those who follow their spiritual beliefs.  It is from Romans 12:9-21 NIV Version:

9 Love must be sincere.  Hate what is evil; cling to what is good.  10 Be devoted to one another in love.  Honor one another above yourselves.  11 Never be lacking in zeal, but keep you spiritual fervor, serving the Lord.  12 Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.  13 Share with the Lord’s people who are in need.  Practice hospitality.  14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse.  15 Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.  16 Live in harmony with one another.  Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position.  Do not be conceited.  17 Do not repay anyone evil for evil.  Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone.  18 If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.  19 Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written:  “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord.  20 On the contrary:  “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink.  In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.”  21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
